Patch it right: nail pops, ceiling stains and dings before you paint

Fresh paint highlights every flaw underneath. A little patching first makes the difference between a paint job and a finished wall.

A gloved hand sanding a freshly filled wall

Most people paint over a wall and are disappointed to see every nail pop and scuff in the new sheen. A bit of prep before the first coat solves most of it.

Nail pops

They’re caused by the wood framing drying and shrinking. Drive a new screw an inch above or below, pull the old nail, fill, sand and prime.

Small holes and dings

Fill with lightweight spackle, let it dry, sand and prime. Paint alone won’t hide a patch, because the spackle soaks up paint differently, so spot-prime it.

Water stains

Find and fix the leak first. Then seal the stain with a stain-blocking primer, or it will bleed through again. If the drywall is soft, it has to be cut out and replaced.
